QuickSilver, Known Problems
QS is a very stable program. There are, however a few problems that remain unresolved. I'm listing them here along with work-arounds if they are available. None of these problems will prevent you from using and enjoying the full compliment of QS features. Please return here from time to time to see if any items have been added. I'm sure a few will be.
General
- Occasionally when working with QS, you open some dialog and QS freezes. It won't accept mouse or keyboard input. What has likely happened is that the dialog you opened has gotten behind the main window. This is caused by a flaw in the visual component library QS uses. Should you find yourself in this situation, press <Ctrl><Tab>. This will bring the dialog back to the front and QS will again function normally. Sorry if this has frustrated you in the past.
- On rare occassions QS may report "Unable to wipe file! Error: the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process." If this occurs the best action to take is to reboot your computer. That will kill any zombie process that may be keeping the file open.
Message Editing
- Cut, Copy, and Paste hotkeys sometimes don't work. This problem lies with Microsoft MDI intertace. That's a program whose main window can contain multiple childe windows within. Editor windows etc. Since QS was started, they have changed policy and now discourage it's use. QS v2 will not be an MDI application. Mousing is your best alternative. If you mouse 1 edit function, QS hotkeys will be activated for the rest of the session.
Attachments
- Bad packet errors sometimes after transit of PGP encrypted attachments. Not sure why. I have not experienced it with other types of attachments. To send a file you wish attached, encrypt the entire message and not the file.
- Lost attachments when they are placed within the body of the message. If you exchange files with others attach them normaly.
Messages
- Error When deleting some inbound messages when done through the delete function of the message viewer window. Instead delete the message from the mailbox index window.
Sending Mail
- 'Interrupted System Call' error. You are probably running Norton Anti-Virus or some such. You will need to turn off virus checking on outgoing email--only outgoing email. The SMTP control QS uses doesn't seem to like the delays caused by the scan.
News
- 'Not Ready For Head' or 'Not Ready For Group', errors. This happens occasionally when the QSnews last article number is way less than the last article number at the news server. You'll need to manually advance the QS last article number. This is done in the NNTP Account Manager->NNTP Account Profile->Newsgroup Profile. If you are going long times between mail checks you should consider running QSnews periodically from windows scheduler. QSnews help explains the commandline switches.
Nyms
- On decrypting nym message you receive 'Sorry, you do not have a secret key corresponding to any of the public keys below' and there are no keys listed below. The problem is that you chose to use Encrypt-3DES or Encrypt-CAST directive in your reply block. It could also be you are using Encrypt-Key with Komite nymserver which substitutes Encrypt-3DES. Antani may do this as well. Use the Encrypt-Key directive instead where possible or avoid Encrypt-XXX in remailers that do not support Encrypt-Key. Regardless of this problem, Encrypt-Key is always the best choice.
